Been a while
since North Bay
had a livestock farm

For today’s 2NBWL podcast, host Lisa Boivin, producer Ben Sargent and content director Dave Dale went on a field trip to the Finch Family Farm’s N7 Cattle Company just inside the North Bay city limits. The trio gathered in Redbridge on Lennox Road to chat with the owner, TJ and Nancy Finch.

Before going on a short tour of the 200-acre farm and mixing in with the livestock, Lisa learns about how they raise and treat their animals…and how that translates into better quality meat. They also share their journey from Alberta to North Bay as Terry returns to his North Bay roots while explaining important parts of farming Black Angus beef, as well as differences between Ontario and Alberta.

In related news breaking this afternoon, Leon’s North Bay announced the Country Tunes & N7 Cattle Company BBQ Fundraiser Aug. 8-9 in support of the Nipissing Country Music Association. Attendees can taste the naturally-raised, hormone and antibiotic-free N7 burgers for a $7 donation, with proceeds helping the NCMA revive the Country Open Singing Contest in 2025. Follow Leon’s North Bay social media for more information, freezer deals, draws and updates.

First person
to cycle to the
South Pole from
edge of Antarctica

Maria Leijerstam joins the Backroads Bill podcast tomorrow morning to talk about her setting a world record as the first person to cycle to the South Pole from the edge of Antarctica.

The almost 650-km trek took just over 10 days and saw Maria go through treacherous conditions to achieve her goal. She talks about the preparation required, including having to learn how to use a trike and the challenges it created compared to her trusty bicycle.

You can find her book and documentary on her website: https://www.marialeijerstam.com/

The event, which attracted several hundred people, was co-hosted by the Department of National Defence and the City of North Bay at Memorial Gardens on June 20.

Liza Vandermeer and Carol Hansman, who are part of the Trout Lake Conservation Association, joined Lisa to talk about the open house.

Echo Essentials:

nuclear waste northwatch brennain lloyd poster

Brennain Lloyd, of Northwatch, joins the Echo Essentials podcast to poke holes in nuclear waste storage decisions and the so-called strategy being used at power generation sites, adding that much of it could travel through North Bay via truck convoys for half a century.

Before the discussion, co-hosts Scott Clark asks Dave Dale why they are doing so many podcasts about the environment when they could be drilling into why City Hall windows don’t match.

Coming up this Thursday, Shane Moyer, of the Homeless Advocates Association shares his own journey of addiction, criminality, street life, recovery and why he works to help support others.

Shane suggests there are better options for treatment and transition for those who fall between the cracks and then have to overcome the policies that hinder their improvement. The show drops next week.

Backroads Bill:

Longtime adventure buddy Brian Emblem joins the show to chat about a recent adventure he went on with Bill and Jason Ingram, a previous podcast guest. The trio found an empty concrete swimming pool on an island in Raven Lake and there’s quite a tale to tell.

The story involves the depths a husband will go for his wife, some ingenious engineering, and not having the rights to the land in the first place.
