The Heritage Train and Carousel Co. is back in operation beginning this Saturday after being shut down for the past couple weeks due to “operational issues.” The passing of chief mechanic and volunteer Dan Pigeau, the company’s only person with the proper certification, meant they had to scramble to find an alternate to meet safety regulations.
The unexpected development also derailed plans to celebrate the Heritage company’s 30th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 3 (although discussions at the next meeting this coming Tuesday will lead to either a new date or they may revert back to the initial schedule.)
Meanwhile, the celebration of life for Dan Pigeau is being held Wednesday, July 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McGuinty Funeral Home.

This week’s Echo Essentials podcast is all banter between co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale after a guest gets ‘waylaid’ and couldn’t make it to the studio…and the tables are turned a bit as Scott finds himself agreeing with Dave for a change.
Seriously, do we really need more access to alcohol? If you are tripped up by a pothole, should you report it and file a lawsuit? (Scott and Dave share their own experiences). The city already absolves itself when their infrastructure work causes problems…with a viewer telling Scott it happened to him too.
And who in their right mind would want to be a landlord under current rules and tribunal backlogs?
In the feedback department, Scott still doesn’t agree with a reader/viewer who told him he’s wrong about the city hall windows and that the lack of symmetry is refreshing.

Creating a ‘hub’ facility to better connect the homeless with social and health services needs more thought and consultation. That reality was made clear during the District of Nipissing Social Service Administration Board’s public meeting Wednesday in the City Hall council chambers.
Presentations by representatives of businesses, front line workers and a resident who endured this winter’s ill-conceived ‘warming centre’ at the corner of Worthington and Fraser streets made it clear improved communications, transparency of intentions and consultation is needed.

Echo Essentials:
Shane Moyer says the recent Echo Essentials podcasts featuring local politicians, police chief and business representatives didn’t have the street-level perspective. Our podcast last week rectifies that oversight.
Moyer, who is trying to help through the Homeless Advocates Association, has gone through addiction treatment, lived on the street and was a criminal during the dark times. He says the Northern Pines transitionary treatment program might work for some, but he is a proponent of a co-operative venture proposal in a more farm-like setting.
They have a 23-page plan that would offer more natural and homeopathic addiction treatment options, he said, while also stressing that a business operation tied to it would help them become self-dependent. Before the interview, co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale discuss other city issues, including the mis-matching City Hall windows.

As much as I like listening to Scott Clark and respect his opinions, I personally like the mosaic appearance of the “mismatched” windows on our City Hall.
My response however would be totally different if there was only one or two windows breaking the uniformity, which is how this probably started. But now, I look at it as added character to the building.
However, we live in a democracy and if the majority have issues with the mosaic, maybe breaking a few more selected windows could result in better symmetry.
