critique city council
meeting clips
Today’s Echo Essentials Podcast includes video clips of elected officials and a citizen presenter making comments at the June 18 North Bay City Council and Committee meeting.
Co-hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale add their perspective, as well as some context.
Before the clips are played, Scott asks Dave about his city council beat role at the Nugget, including when it started and how it ended. Dave says he replaced a reporter who was eventually fired for “killing” with ink a former mayor of Mattawa (who wasn’t dead yet) and then adding fake colour into a court case story. And then Dave explains why he referred to the reporter as a ‘scab’ who crossed a picket line in Calgary before being hired by the Nugget.
Pivotal call at
home plate sparks
umpire podcast
North Bay umpires Dave Saad and Lui Ricci join Dave Dale on the Small Town Times podcast to talk baseball.
A video capturing a desperate attempt to steal home to tie the NDA high school championship game on June 14 provides a chance to talk about the sport, including how it’s healthy and growing in North Bay with a strong minor league base plus senior loop … with girls fastball also strong.
Both long-time umpires share their experiences, right from their start to some of the great local players and tense moments, as well as the talented athletes who passed through this way back in the day.
As it turns out, all the diamond users are facing the same constraint: more umpires are needed.

Today’s Zen Suggestion: Canada Day is not celebrated by everyone the same way, and some people don’t feel at all enthusiastic about it. And that’s OK. Pass the potato salad and have a great day, eh!

Featured on last week’s Echo Essentials podcast is Karin Pratte, the City’s Senior Environment and Facilities Engineer, who manages the water filtration plant, waste water treatment and Merrick landfill, among other things.
She describes the city’s role in cleaning up a PFAS ‘hot-spot’ at the airport, which is funded 97 percent by the Department of National Defence, which owned the property when firefighting foam exercises contaminated soils. The show was posted on Thursday afternoon as an open house was to taking place at Memorial Gardens. Other agencies sharing info included the Ministry of Environment and North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit.
As for the pre-interview banter between co-hosts Dave Dale and Scott Clark, the topic is about parking. Scott argues that it’s safer to back into your space and Dave pokes logical holes in his contention.

In Tuesday’s newsletter, in case you missed it …
Two Nugget stories caught our eye this week:
The first one was about the lack of foster parents in the area, with the Nipissing Parry Sound District Children’s Aid Society spending hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to send kids to homes in southern Ontario. Included is the cost to commute staff and parents for visits and check ups. It makes us wonder why?
The second story was about a public tax bill that’s growing exponentially to cover funeral expenses for those who can’t afford services. Are more poor people dying or is it a matter of inflation? Inquiring minds want to know.
In unrelated news, circle Aug. 3 on your Civic Holiday weekend calendar. The Heritage Railway and Carousel Co. is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special day of events at the North Bay waterfront attraction, including the naming of its two-millionth rider. See the story HERE.
