Ice fishing regulations for Lake Nipissing include a miniscule 5-centimetre slot size for walleye (a keeper must be at least 40 cm long and no more than 45 cm). You can only have two in your possession if you have a “sports fishing” licence or one on a “conservation” permit. See Zone 11 regulations that start on Page 87 of the PDF version of the provincial guide HERE.

Echo Essentials
Podcast peels onion
of Trout Lake lots,
operational review
The latest Small Town Times podcast focused on the top North Bay stories of 2023, many of which will continue to make headlines in 2024.
Guests included BayToday City Hall reporter Stu Campaigne and former councillor Dave Mendicino, joining host Dave Dale (former municipal issues columnist for both the Nugget and BayToday).
Topping the list of stories was the proposed renaming of Chippewa Intermediate and Secondary School, future development of lots and protection of water quality in the Trout Lake watershed, the proposed and pricey twin-pad community centre, the often-maligned budgeting process (which kicked off Monday with a water rate increase), much-anticipated operational review of city departments and the reconstruction of Cassellholme (as well as new board for Castle Arms).
See the City’s budget meeting information HERE.
Mendicino has already attracted negative feedback for suggesting a fulsome operational review and budget debate would include a hard look at the library and out-sourcing city services, such internet technology. And Campaigne says council’s debate about the community centre was muddied by focusing on the projected cost rather than the priorities of what it would provide.
UPDATE: BayToday posted a story about the podcast interview subject, focusing on the Trout Lake development issue, see it HERE and comment at the bottom of the article.
Five sports ‘dudes’
with hockey bias
mull top 2023 story
Covid finally caught up to Lisa Boivin, host of Echo’s premier podcast To North Bay With Love, so producer Ben Sargent took over the studio for a Special Sports Episode. Joining him for a discussion about the top sports stories of 2023 are Cogeco’s Clarke Heipel, BayToday’s Chris Dawson, The Nugget’s Greg Estabrooks and Small Town Times editor Dave Dale (also Echo content director). Lisa returns Thursday.
BayToday had already decided its pick for the top story last year, but the panel members offered their input on the various options with each having their say and they went around the horn at the end with ‘honourable mentions’ that went off the script previously outlined.

To North Bay With Love:
Ever get a ‘feeling’ about something, although there’s no apparent reason, yet the decision turns out 100% on the money? Lisa Boivin, host of Echo’s premier podcast, To North Bay With Love, shares in last Thursday’s episode how she followed such a ‘gut-feeling’ and it changed her life for the better.
It was the perfect introduction to her interview guests, Kelly and Karen Sarlo, a mother-daughter duo offering medium, medical intuitive and psychic modalities services. They talk about the value of intuition and how we are programmed at a young age to ignore our natural abilities to feel and interpret the world, although we shouldn’t.
You can find links to their ‘Coffee with the Sarlos’ and ‘Sips of Sanity’ podcasts on their ‘The Sarlos’ website, or go straight to their YouTube channel HERE.

Small Business Video
Challenge offers prizes
The Business Centre is holding a Small Business Video Challenge to premiere Feb. 5, 2024 on @TBCNPS YouTube with a submission deadline of Jan. 15, 2024. It’s a follow up to the small business ad contest last February.
Home-based and commercial-based small businesses in Nipissing and Parry Sound are encouraged to create a 30-second video (cell phone vertical style) that promotes what makes their business special. Once submitted, a selection of 10 will be featured in a podcast-style video with a panel of local experts providing feedback to the viewers and listeners about what makes each submission effective and engaging.
Three prizes will be awarded to the top video creators with points based on creativity, production value and business marketing with an extra prize for most engaging. Of course, each participating business wins by getting exposure in the contest, with both viewers and the other businesses.
Sponsors are: North Bay Echo, Digital Main Street, OBIAA, Ontario Government, The Business Centre Nipissing Parry Sound and TABIA. The link to submit videos is HERE, where you’ll also find more information.
Does your group
or business want
to have a podcast?
If you want your North Bay and area podcast or YouTube video stories/interviews included on the Echo Community Podcast Network, there are a few basic requirements: Shows need a track record with at least five previously published podcasts or videos; Descriptions of each episode are needed, as well as a general description with artwork; plus a specific playlist of up to 15 shows (so new shows are added to the website listing automatically).
We’re interested in promoting shows that want to expand and grow by capitalizing on promotion through the network and the Echo Essentials newsletter. We also offer a new show development service where we help create, brand and market podcasts for a fee. Inquire by email with [email protected]
